Samsung is working with Amdocs to help more mobile operators virtualize their network in the 5G era. The companies say they will work to integrate virtual network (VNF) functions with operators using the Samsung 5G network offer in the Open Networking Automation Platform (ONAP). "This is less related to the new capabilities of Samsung network devices and is very focused on supporting [communication service providers] on their way to 5G and network virtualization, specifically their connections," Oren Marmur, vice president and head of NFV at Amdocs, written in response for questions. Marble explained that Samsung will provide VNF in the primary 5G domain, and Amdocs will provide its software, NFV, SDN and ONAP knowledge to enable these VNFs in ONAP. Activities will begin with the virtualized function of Samsung's CPU and will eventually be expanded to other capabilities, including 5G core components, designed to help operators build a fully cloud 5G network, according to Amdocs. VNF in combination with 5G "The cooperation is related to embedding Samsung VNF in ONAP and certifying it both in terms of standards and ONAP framework, as well as integrating it with the Amdocs NFV platform, which would allow us to jointly use the capabilities required [for] VNF 5G as well as the required arrangement and automation layer" said Marble. "We're going through a standard ONAP-based implementation process, adapting it to the ONAP service model, VNF modeling, and VNF packaging." Companies also intend to explore the possibilities of providing other network services, including virtual radio access networks (vRAN) and greater NFV integration. The partnership "helps us accelerate a significant shift towards a dynamic software-based architecture that will enable networks to adapt to changing user requirements and network conditions," said Jaeho Jeon, Samsung's vice president of network, said in a statement. Marble describes vRAN as "the next step on the path to virtualization - which not only virtualizes basic mobile functions, but also RAN control." This foundation will provide operators with benefits related to service efficiency, greater automation, less operational complexity and faster implementation, he added. "The cooperation here covers a comprehensive process, from design, optimization, implementation, to coordination of networks and services of all implemented virtual functions," said Marmur.
