Indian chap called up saying that he was from Microsoft and that my PC was having technical issues. I knew, of course that this was a con but I wanted to see how he would go about doing it. By asking me to run a couple of commands (the Windows event viewer and msconfig) he tried to imply that errors I was getting on my PC (of which there are thousands in every event viewer in my experience) will confirmation that indeed my PC had a serious issue and luckily he was there on behalf of Microsoft to help me.
