My brother got a call from this number asking for a gas meter reading. He was not sure where the caller was from but a 1471 and internet search brought up this number as belonging to British Gas. However I am not with British Gas but with Southern Electric, for at least the last 6 years. I called Southern Electric who said they did not call for any reading and would not do so. It s a company ringing about debts they think you may have had or have and they try to reference your connection to a survey or some search you ve done possibly connected to you looking for the best credit cards available. Very busy call centre with lots of other people in the background so difficult to hear everything.

This is the second time I've received these unsolicited calls- the first time was from a different number but it's the same scam. The recorded voice message says that it is a call from HMRC regarding tax fraud. You are requested to press 1 to speak to an officer who then calls you back from a listed HMRC number. They inform you that you owe tax & when you ask for details or question why you've not received any written information they become argumentative & threatening.
