It rang shortly after I d been on to British Gas. Their automated system said they may ring back to give a short survey on how my enquiry was handled. I didn t get there in time to answer it, and they left no message. My worry is that I am ex-directory, rang them with call barring on, have never given them my number and also subscribe to TPS, so how did they get my number?

This is a Vodafone call centre that attempts to get you to change your mind after you have cancelled your contract.
Hang up straight when I answered. Probably spam
Indian sounding lady saying she was calling Housing Association tenants to ask about outstanding repairs or damage to the property that had been neglected. Wasn't sure if she was gonna try to sell me something so I told her everything was fine even though the roof has been leaking a bit. Seemed friendly enough and didn't push the issue further.
