They usually work for some third company and call with offer of some goods or services for the actual company they were hired for. A gentleman with an Indian accent called he was from the Telephone Preference Service asking if I was still receiving nuisance calls. Went on to ask me to confirm the expiry date on my card, "the one that the direct debit for my phone bill is paid from". Knew by this stage that it was a scam to get bank details so told him I was not prepared to give any details over the phone and hung up. Within minutes of ending the call, the number called back but I did not answer.
