When I said I would like to verify this with Google direct, the caller then said that she was actually an ad research company and had stumbled across our google ad.

These clowns call from India and are very abusive. Ask them to hold on a sec and just put phone on the side and go back to what you were doing. No point arguing or being abusive as they likely have your email address and obviously have your telephone number.

Claims you are entitled to some sort of refund/ppi but in reality is a scam. Am worried that elderly people would press the return number and be charged at premium rate...This activity should be made illegal..and we should be able locate them so we can knock on their door!!

I suggest you folk get a BT8500 Advanced Call Blocker phone. You can block it or only allow it to go to answer phone. I purchased a quad set for handling all these unsolicited calls. They are brilliant and as far as I know, the only phone to do this.
