I was called by someone from this number at 1.30.am on Sundy asking about a local car boot sale in my area, it seemed a strange number for a general enquiry.

When you answer, there is silence, followed by an automated voice saying "goodbye" and ending the call. This method of validating your phone number is real is used to collate lists of phone numbers that online scammers then try to collate against other information they have collected to build a profile of personal data that can be used for identity scams.
