If you speak then the line is detected as 'an active voice line' and logged as such, a scammer will then be calling you later, and usually using a different number! If you don't recognize the number calling DON'T SPEAK, JUST LISTEN! If you don't hear a voice and then the line goes dead then congratulations - you've just successfully escaped being scammed! SCAM The caller was a recorded message suggesting they were from a Londoon Magistrate and stated that if I choose to ignore this information then my National Insurance number will be blocked and stop working. After another threat they told me to press 1 to speak to the officer in charge of the case. At which point I hung.
Quite possibly genuine call from British Gas, but as yet not able to confirm that categorically.

Scan call saying that they were from my bank and that over £300 had been taken out of my account to pay Amazon. I immediately, put the phone down and checked my balance. This was alot of rubbish. Advice ignore or report but do not respond or do anything else.

Getting phone calls about unauthorised payments, definitely scam
Fraud: Caller claimed to be from Amazon Security, but my phone isn't associated with any Amazon accounts so they're either phishing for passwords or for account information.
scam, wanted to buy a wardrobe on gumtree, via a courier, proceeded to send me a dodgy link to input my card details. noped out. they called me a scammer for wanting to deal with direct transfers, paypal or cash.

I have received a call from this number a recorded message claiming to be the HMRC threatening to take action against me. There was an option to stay on the line and speak to an operator. Obviously I didn't. When tried to call back, receiver ended the call back.
