I called this number back and they said it was vodafone. He wanted to chat about my contract but got disconnected. I contacted vodafone to check if this number was them and they confirmed that it was a courtesy call from them, so it seemed to be genuine.

The point of the scam is to find gullible people who will believe what they say. They are crooks who once they find a victim will ask them for personal details and /or credit card/bank details "So we can proceed with our refund to you" They then commit identity fraud or empty your bank account. Obviously you were the ones they were looking for for them to steal your hard earned money from. Had 4 missed calls from this number today so rang it back. It s a recorded message for yay.com asking you to protect your phone etc using their cloud. Don t know where they got my number from. But the message does end asking you to ring a 0330 number!!
