One way of dealing with these people, if you have a bit of time to waste, is to waste their time. When they start talking about the accident you had, pick it up and run with it. Tell them you were told you would get a lot of money, as it was a Texaco tanker that hit you, and the driver was arrested because he was drunk. Sound confused / gormless.
