My phone displays a caller list and I called the number this morning, a message said "the number you have dialled has not been recognised", how can this happen?

Was called by someone - with a poor command of English - who said their name was John and after 3 attempts I was able to understand he was phoning on behalf of Currys PC World. When I asked where he had got my mobile phone no. from he got abusive and told me to "fuck off" and then hung up. If this is indeed a legit call from Currys PC World then it says a lot about their customer care!
