I just told him that I am not with BT (true) and can t understand why BT didn t know that, and I hung up. This change of approach could be dangerous though because those with a BT connection might think it is genuine.

This is a scam where they pretend to be BT and will give you te above number to call with an id code to verify their authenticity. They tell you they want to shut down your Broadband for 5 days due to errors - blah blah. Probably after they will try to get access to your pc in some way. Don t know cos I crashed out and phoned BT who said it was a scam.
