Seems to be used for some telemarketing call center - this range of numbers 17929179xx (common feature, they use more numbers of the same range) is mostly reported with PPI / insurance mareting / energy schemes. I have twice received calls last week from somebody (Roger, I think) claiming to be from SSE. He wanted to talk about a new contract. He didn’t specify whether it was gas or electricity. He first asked for somebody who has not worked here for several years. I asked him to send the new prices by email. He seemed upset by this very simple request and claimed it was impossible. I told him to call back later in the week when he had sent the email. He did from this number and came out with the same drivel
