Caller claimed he was from BT. Obviously in a call centre in India - could tell from his accent and the background noise. When challenged, gave me this number. Fake.

I believe they re trying to find numbers which are "live" so they can sell them on to telemarketers and other unscrupulous types. Grotty little businesses. The best way of doing that is calling and then seeing which phones get answered. If a phone is answered then it must be "live" so they hang up and that number is sold on to a 3rd party. Then if you own the number and you answered you get even more nuisance calls.
