This looks like yet another 0844 scam, where they call your number and hang up after a couple of seconds. The old catch is that they hope you will return the call out of curiosity and then incur ££ as 0844 is premium rate and not included in most call packages. Obvious scam.

These people called me today and told me I had taken out a loan for £5,000 in 2002 which they say I had paid off in 2007. I didn t have a loan so I decided to have a bit of fun with them. They started off by saying they had a letter from my bank stating that I was entitled to a refund of £2,000 (this went up later in the conversation to £3,000). They asked me if I could remember (for the security reasons) the name of the lender, I said that I couldn t remember and I said to them that if they had a letter
