I tried to book a room at The Principal Oxford Spires Hotel, Abingdon Road, OX1 4PS, Oxford and called a number 08448542910 indicated on their website. I had to call twice as there was an automated telephone service and no one was able to answer my phone calls. Last month I saw a charge of 1.38 GBP plus VAT on my phone bill!! What a wrong way to make money!! Looks like the hotel is doing that badly so they have to charge potential customers to simply book a room. According to the reviews on the above number

'Matthew' (a mere recorded voice) called just now on this number, wanting to tell me something urgent & government related about the lagging installed in my loft. Yeah, right, it's a scam. I hung up.
This number is a scammer talking from an automate robot saying the persona called is going to be arrested for tax fraud and so on. And so invite you to press 1 (which I highly recommend not to) before they take any actions.

Person on the phone told him he was calling from HMRC, quoted some references that sounded legit, including the details of an arrest warrant because of unpaid taxes... But then when he tried to ask questions, person on the phone became really aggressive... Which only wound my partner up and made him ask more questions. Message sent claiming to be my child and to block their old number and text this new number from now on. I asked which child and was told to guess... amazingly I guessed the name correctly! (even though I have no kids). I'm guessing this long lost child would probably eventually ask for some money or something...
